oh yeah. i'm back. oh yeah.

Wed Aug 8, 2007, 7:10 AM
i've been back about a week. i guess i picked the right week to go because they were hit by a typhoon yesterday.

yet again, taipei was missed.

we did get some cool sideways rain today, though.

anyway, i've a few rolls of film to process.

btw, what's the lowest iso the bessa L? 25. hey! i have 2 rolls of efke kb25 left over from my last visit to freestyle. hmm...can you do street photography with a focus-less camera and iso 25 film?

let's find out. i'm finishing up the second roll now. thank god the weather today was *really* sunny.

getaway

Sun Jul 15, 2007, 5:08 AM
hong kong is an option...someone i know was going, but i've been there so many times already and i really don't have the desire to go shopping 24/7. i mean, yeah there's a disneyland there but c'mon, i'm from the hometown of the original. why would i want to see what is essentially the same thing but smaller and with "Uncle Mao"s portrait welcoming me?

he killed 2 million people and now welcomes you to "the happiest place on earth".

originally i thought it was going to be kl, malaysia...i have a few friends there from my involvement with photomalaysia.com (a completely seperate story). unfortunately, i really can't swing it financialy...need to save for my trip back to the states to see my family & friends next July.

so it's going to be 3 days/2 nights on orchid island ([link], one of taiwan's satalite islands. this isn't one of those ubiquitos tourist-magnet-resort-umbrellas-in-your-drinks-type islands but one that is actually culturally unique. It is home to the Yami aboriginal group and was isolated as a kind of ethnological reserve until the late 60s. Even now it remains in large part unspoiled...no resorts, spas, mcdonalds, starbucks (where the hell am i going to get my iced latte from?), etc.... yes there is tourism, but it's managed. it'll be a great chance to explore some of taiwan's aboriginal culture...not something you really get to see or appreciate in taipei.

i'm leaving on aug 1st. time to dust off the 1947 crown graphic and pick up some 4x5 film :D

it's bright and sunny. not a single cloud in the sky...and yet, it's raining.

it's raining *sideways*.

that could only mean one thing: a typhoon is nearby.

cool.

i missed typhoon season.

so i caught napoleon dynamite on cinemax again. good pic but now i'm gonna be up all night suffering bad high school flashbacks. why? because in high school i existed somewhere between napoleon and pedro.

i like pedro the best

anyway, now i need to do something to artificially inflate my geek-diven male ego again. when i was in high school it would be as simple as meeting my fellow geek compadres in the library for a game of d&d or call of cthulhu or something.

now...maybe watch the last 20 minutes of star wars IV? that always works. anything from the 80s with harrison ford is good that way. i'm open to suggestions.

moving on...

over the past week i've been uploading some old-ish shots. i've been re-organizing my negs from the chaotic, disorganized pile on my left into a more  helter-skelter, anarchic pile on my right. no worries, tho. this weekend i've managed to find the time to develop 4 rolls of era100 and 6 of tri-x so i'll be posting some new stuff next week.

torrential rain stuff, street stuff, maybe even some abstract stuff

depends on what doesn't suck when i take a closer look at it

stay tuned

Belarus, Taiwan, and the Covers

Thu Jun 14, 2007, 5:55 AM
So I went to Ocean Park last Sun/Mon. The hotel was originally booked but 2 weeks of crap weather gave us an opening and a discount. Cool enough, the sun came out just for us, too.

Here are some pics of a rock band that played covers in the food court area after lunch. All the members are from Belarus with the exception of the lead singer, who is Taiwanese.

Getting good composition was hard as there was a lot of stuff in the way...speakers, mixing boards, lamp posts, strollers with little babies in them, etc.... Here are a few of the ones I like. There are some additional shots on my website ([link].

All photos were shot on Tri-X (EI250) dev'd in HC-110(H) for 14m @20C. Camera was Bessa R2A. Lenses were 50mm and 15mm.

the Challenge

Thu May 24, 2007, 6:37 AM
Some time back ~kingmouf issued a photo assignment: stick a fresh roll of film in your camera and go for a walk ([link]. So I did. I threw a roll of ERA100 film into my R2 and shot through it while walking the 3 blocks between my apartment and the local Carrefor supermarket.

These are my favorites off that roll.

That's it! Comments always welcome, of course :)

Of course I had to do Disneyland. I grew up going to Disneyland at least a couple times a year...I mean, there's been a Disneyland in LA since my parents were little. Disney "world"? Yeah, 99% humidity and bugs the size of cars. Eurodisney? Pleease...can you imagine Mickey sipping on an expresso b*tching about how that pyramid thing in front of the Louvre is such an eye sore? Hong Kong Disney? It still pisses me off that Mickey shares the same nickname as Mao Tse Tung (seriously...they're both "Uncle Mao". Same Chinese character, too). That does explain the mass graves of artists and intellectuals they found behind toon town, though...

LA is the *original* and my twins were just old enough to appreciate it for the first time. Here are my pot shots from Disneyland.

Somehow I forgot the lines...

Guess one got lost.

Classic ride.

Classic toy.

Her son had run out into the middle of the parade path.

Interesting that the Photo Supply store didn't actually carry film...

A cafe in Downtown Disney

And my favorite of the day...

That's it for this episode. Next episode: family & friends. Stay tuned :)

Here are a few more shots from holiday visit to LA.

Let's start with what LA really is: a hispanic guy selling kosher hot dogs at Griffith Park.

A patriotic liquor store. There's a house of gang bangers next door.

Parked at the edge of Chinatown while waiting for my mom to duck into a store and get some platic dinosaurs for the kids.

A McDonalds Playplace. They didn't have any kids with them...

Here's a tip. If you have metal implants...like, say 10 screws and a plate in your right leg from a motorcyle accident you had a couple years prior...just a for instance, mind you...be prepared for some hardcore searching if heading out through LAX. Not quite at the level of rubber-glove-bend-over-here's-my-finger but not comfortable, either.

Anyway, some shots from LAX.

Patriotic, isn't it?

Thanks for visiting. Please wait in line.

Big flags everywhere.

People-mover. No line here. The only place.

More waiting. Outside.

Well, that's all for this installment. Next episode: THE MAGIC KINGDOM!!!

So I've been back in Taipei from my visit home for a couple of weeks already. Thanks to my twins birth in combination with a motorcycle accident that screwed up my right leg, it had been almost 3 years since I had been back to SoCal and I really did enjoy the trip.

So here are some random shots. I'll post more later.

Let's start with my favorite shot and my new featured shot. Wanna buy it as a mug? :p

CalTrans guys heading off for lunch

No, we're not in Texas. No Bushes.

Last shopping day before Christmas.

  • Mood: Lazy
So I'm heading back to LA tomorrow for a Christmas visit. I hop on in Taipei at 4pm, I get off at LAX at noon.

On the same day.

I should try it again on Groundhog Day just for a laugh.

11 hours trapped in a flying tin can. With twin 2-year old boys. Won't be too bad. Coming back is 14+ hours.

With twin 2-year old boys.

Who will be hopped up on grandma & grandpa-styled spoiling. Which, of course, they deserve. They're only 2.

Get the spoiling while you can, guys ;).

Disneyland, San Diego Zoo, Del Amo post-XMas sales, oh my.

Yeah, we're flying from China to see pandas at the San Diego Zoo. But of course Taiwan isn't China, is it? They vote here, even if sometimes it's for the wrong guy. Like my country.

And there aren't any pandas here. There is a nice tall building, tho.

So I won't be adding new photos to my gallery until I get back. No worries. I'm packing a shitload of film. All B&W. No color. That's for my wife's digiP&S.

Updated MYeBlog.org

Wed Dec 20, 2006, 2:55 AM
Before my trip back to LA I made some updates to my bloghosting community site, MYeBlog.org ([link].

Besides bug fixes, I changed the WYSIWYG editor to something faster and more functional, created a new portal page with it's own new functions, added the ability to categorize your blog as a whole (custom categories for individual entries still apply), and added some new templates (you can still create your own with the HTML editor).

That's it :)

The first ten people who reply to this journal get put up here, along with three of my favorite deviations by them.

But you have to put this in your journal as well, so no cheating!

Well, we didn't source any HC-110. :glare:

One shop did say that they would have some in at some point next week... students bought it all.

Damn students.

They had plenty of T-Max developer, tho. Never tried it, so I bought a bottle. 1+4 to working means it's not going to last long, but that's okay. It's only meant to last until the HC-110 gets in ;)

*sigh*

My bottle of HC-110 is almost gone and I have 6 rolls of Tri-X, Gekko, and HP5+ sitting on the coffee table. My friend called the local shop that I frequent to see if they have any.

Nope.

And they haven't a clue when they'll have more.

We're (my friend, his friend, & I) heading down to the "photo district" (Poi-Ai Rd) to do some searching tomorrow afternoon. If I can't find any then I guess I'm stuck with LC-29 (abundant next door) or if I have the $$$ then DD-X.

At least I still have Diafine. That stuff lasts forever.

So I'm on the RFF ([link] and I hear about a street shooting contest over here. How convinient as it's poring rain outside and nothing says "street shot" better then Tri-X, a mechanical rangefinder, and crappy weather.

So I took my shot for the contest, souped the negs, scanned the best shot of the roll, and uploaded it.

Take a look and tell me what you think (it's my featured image now) :)
