There's a new street GM. Go over to page & say hi.
Oh, and his first DD was awarded to
so obviously he knows what he's doing
How can you help him do his job? Here's an idea. When you come across a photo in the street category that doesn't meet dAs definition of street photography (that's deviantArt's definition, not yours), copy and paste the following into the comments:
This is a nice photo but, by deviantArt's definition of street photography, I don't think it belongs in the street category. dA defines street photography as candid photography in public space and I don't think this fits. If you need a more visual definition, please see the galleries of #street or #The-Yard-Collective. If you take a longer look at the available categories, there are plenty of subcategories under Urban & Rural where this image would better go. Again, this is not meant to be offensive. This is part of viral street photography education campaign started by `bQw. Please direct any comments to him.
This is just an idea to find a polite way for people to stop using the street category as a dumping ground, which it is. It's not a personal attack of any sort and it's not rude.
Honestly, I don't really feel the need for it - And dA has a general policy in case of miss-categorisations, isn't it. Not too big a fan of that either, but at least it's private through a note, and not public. Just don't like the thought of everyone playing guard or policeman on everyone else...
But right now there's very little enforcement. Reported miscats are generally ignored.
Plus, I'd truly like to educate people on what street photography is. Not a purist point of view, but simply spread awareness of the core of the genre: candid photos in public space.
I guess this comes from the perspective of being GM for 18 months and thus understanding how many people don't know what it is.
Do you have a alternative suggestion?
